Tilghman Island

Tilghman Island Professional Review and Guide

"Paddle along long stretches of shoreline, past a bird sanctuary and a site where some of the oldest ancient artifacts in Maryland were discovered. Tilghman Island is a charming little Eastern Shore community located at the end
of a peninsula, 11.0 miles southwest of the popular tourist town of Saint Michaels.

About an hour’s drive from the Bay Bridge, Tilghman Island is bordered by the Chesapeake Bay on the west and the Choptank River on the east. The island is approximately 3 miles long, 1 mile wide, and was settled in 1659. It is also home to one of the last waterman communities in the United States."

Depending on conditions, paddling in the open water around the island can be too challenging for a novice paddler. The western shoreline of the island can be very choppy and doesn’t offer many places to land in the event of a summer storm or sudden winds since all the riprap (rock used to protect the shoreline) makes landing difficult.
