Point Lookout State Park Campground

Point Lookout State Park Campground Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Point Lookout is all about the water. The entire park and campgrounds are surrounded: Lake Conoy and Point Lookout Creek split the peninsula, while the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay meet at the southern edge. It’s an exceedingly beautiful spot, though its history tells a darker tale. A Civil War prison camp on the site once housed more than 50, 000 Confederate troops. Now, the place couldn’t be more peaceful.

If you want hiking, you may be disappointed. The Periwinkle Point Trail (less than a mile in length) is the park’s only land trail (though you can connect the park’s paved roads for a hike of about 5 miles). The abundance of water and tidal action makes land trails superfluous. But if you’ve brought the kayak or canoe, this place is paradise"
