Underground Railroad Trail

Underground Railroad Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Hiking the Underground Railroad Trail in Northwest Branch Stream Valley Park lets kids walk 4 miles in the historic shoes of slaves and experience their journey as they escaped slave owners on the path to freedom.

Woodlawn Manor and the Sandy Spring Friends Meeting House were used to hide slaves on the run. Woodlawn Manor is the trailhead and first interpretive location for the Underground Railroad Trail. While this trail route doesn’t include the Meeting House (built circa 1817), you can extend your hike an additional half mile out and back to visit it. You can print an interpretive trail guide from the Montgomery Parks website (the park and trail directory section). Along the trail, signs indicate historical features of the Underground Railroad."
