Old School House - Holly Tree Loop, Wye Island Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The Old Schoolhouse —Holly Tree Loop is an easy hike that showcases old-growth woods featuring towering trees, a beautiful tidal cove, and a 250-year-old holly tree. Wye Island Natural Resource Area is a wonderful spot for kids. Every trail offers a scenic reward for very little effort —most also include a visit to a cove or bay. This loop, which incorporates the Schoolhouse and Holly Tree Trails, travels through the largest remnant old-growth woods on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. On the way to Grapevine Cove on the Wye River, the trail passes a small wetland pond where wood ducks can be seen in summer. The hike is topped with a stop at a huge holly tree older than the United States. Special considerations: Wye Island Natural Resource Area is open to hunting; check the kiosks or at the office for schedules."

I visited on January 1, 2008. Beautiful trail, fine old growth trees. Some confusion on trail link. Wye Island is a very nice destination. GPS works fairly well and parking lot well marked.
