C & O Canal Towpath: Old Angler’s Inn to Carderock Recreation Area Professional Review and Guide

"The C & O Canal Towpath offers multiple sections of trails, each with its own unique features. Here, the dynamic rock faces at Carderock are a favorite place for local climbers, and this section is one of the best urban cliff areas in the eastern United States. Old Angler’s Inn is a historic restaurant and is a popular meeting place for kayakers who launch here.

The hike begins across the canal from Old Angler’s Inn, a restaurant with a storied history. In a little less than a mile, you’ll come upon Marsden Bridge at the entrance to Marsden Tract Campground. This is a recreation area with multiple campsites used by Scout troops and local groups. After that, the thick brush opens up on the riverside, and you’ll catch glimpses of the huge rock faces that attract rock-climbing enthusiasts from all over."
