Double Rock Park

Double Rock Park Professional Review and Guide

"Enjoy a remarkably isolated spot where Stemmers Run meanders over a slew of rocks in the heart of heavily populated Parkville-Overlea. The Parkville Recreation Council manages the Double Rock recreational area, which nestles into the urban sprawl of the surrounding neighborhoods and nearby Beltway. You can easily miss it—and you’ll just as easily be wowed by the very wild feel of its trails."

Considering how close this park is to the busy streets of Bel Air Road and Putty Hill Ave, its remarkably quiet. Its a great place to bring your kids as they will enjoy the various playgrounds and climbing on the rocks that line Stemmers Run.

I frequent this trail as an after work hike and am joined by about 5-10 others. You really feal like you are far removed from civilization on this hike which is just what is needed after a day at work. There are several places to see small cascading waterfalls and tons of birds. We counted 16 deer on our trip this day! Also, leashed dogs are allowed. I have a service dog so he can go anwhere due to his status as a medical necessaty for me on the trail, but it is nice that other canines are allowed. You will see a wonderful variety of flowers this time of year and even wild roses! Great short hike on well maintaned trails. This would also be a very good trail for newbie hikers wanting to learn to read blazes since they are very pronounced and so well marked.

Nice for what it is - short, local hike. I did it on a Monday after work. There is a section near the end that is a bit overgrown with sticker bushes, so wear long pants. It had been raining for 2 days straight, and still the stream crossings were easy and the mud wasn't too gross. THE DIRECTIONS HAVE A MISTAKE! Once you are on Putty Hill, Fowler is considerably more than 0.2 miles. Just keep going, you should see it before too long.
