Elk Neck State Park

Elk Neck State Park Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Do it all at Elk Neck State Park in one long day of hiking and biking. If it’s summer, leave time for swimming as well. Head straight away from the parking area on the wide, packed-dirt Blue Trail.

You will have great views of Chesapeake Bay on the right on this section of the trail; eventually thick woods will block out distant views. The trail splits at 0.6 miles; go left and you will see a raptor viewing area. Depending on the season, you’ll see vultures, eagles, ospreys, buteos, hawks, harriers, kites, kestrels, merlins, and falcons."

Short trail to the light house which sits atop a bluff at the end of the peninsula, surrounded by the bay and beautiful, sweeping views. We climbed up the light house, carefully. Too hot to stay out in the sun that day.

If you are looking for a place to be infested by ticks, then you definitely want to check out this park. I was so dissapointed here. My husband and I with out two dogs, took the White trail to get a view of the bay from white cliffs and then wanted to check out the lighthouse. The trail was neat, but when we got to the white cliffs area, there were no clear indication where to go.. it was all overgrown, no real markings .. never say the bay. Got back, and pulled out a ridiculous amount of ticks from the dogs and ourselves. No warning signs anywhere regarding ticks. The lady at the entrance collecting money was rather rude regarding our dogs. She asked us to park and quickly get the dogs on the trail. Since we figured there were so many ticks on the way back we hiked on the road back to our car. She again fussed about the dogs walking and asked us to hurry back to our cars. I don't recommend this place.
