Ellicott City, Mount Airy, and New Market, MD Professional Review and Guide

"Three Quaker brothers founded the town of Ellicott City in about 1772 on the Patapsco River and made it one of the greatest milling and manufacturing towns in the East during its heyday. Later, the town became the location of an ironworks and, most important, the first terminus for the B&O Railroad. While the town’s adjacency to the river was a boon to local industry, flooding over the years has destroyed many of the town’s historic buildings.

The Historic District of New Market is a fine example of a small town of the late Federal period. In New Market, dubbed “The Antique Capital of Maryland,” the tree-shaded main street and a few of the side streets boast more than forty antiques, crafts, and specialty shops. Merchants offer everything from candles and dollhouse furniture to country crafts and period antiques."
