Big Gunpowder Falls River

Big Gunpowder Falls River Professional Review and Guide

"Wildflowers, wild trout, and maybe a bit of seclusion (but only midweek) on the cool green pools of a river 15 miles north of the Baltimore beltway. The river has cut its way down below the general lay of the land, and that’s why it’s hidden from view. But a turn off the highway takes you onto roads that are, at once, country. Turn west on Mount Carmel Road, then right after a mile onto Evna Road, and right again onto Falls Road, and the road winds down through a forest of oaks and hickory and hemlock, past moss-covered outcrops of limestone rock, down to the uppermost bridge over the river.

Park in the little lot on the left at the trailhead to Prettyboy Dam, and walk down to the river—a creek really—before you rig your rod. Look at the water, at the cold green pools wreathed with haze on the hottest days of the summer. The water temperature here is reasonably steady at 52 degrees F. Now, when you return to your car to rig your rod, you can think about the river and the browns and the rainbows that abide therein and how you’ll try to fool them, and how they will end up fooling you. Species: Brown. Angling methods: spin, and fly-fishing."
