High Rock

High Rock Professional Review and Guide

"This northernmost hike in Maryland follows the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) southbound along the west flank of South Mountain and then up to the excellent overlook at High Rock. To make a loop, the hike follows Pen Mar High Rock Road back to the parking area.

High Rock Overlook is an interesting phenomenon for more than just geological reasons. The overlook is a large, and quite tall, outcrop of hard quartzite, the top of which is at the level of the road and the parking lot. It drops off to the west a good 75 feet or more, providing an excellent view of the Great Valley."
