Greenbrier State Park

Greenbrier State Park Professional Review and Guide

"Greenbrier State Park provides many recreational opportunities. Mountain biking is just one of them. Home to a number of mountain bike races, Greenbrier has become a favorite destination for many Washington D.C. riders.

The challenging trails are great for the intermediate rider who's not quite ready for the arduous trails further west in Allegany and Garrett Counties. After your ride, take advantage of the beautiful man-made freshwater lake and go for a swim or simply sit back and lounge on the beach."

There is one large loop (red) with several shorter options. I biked the red trail which is 4.5 miles according to the state park map. The terrain was very rocky and would be a challenge for any intermediate or beginner. There is also very little flat trails, so you are either going up, or going down. For a shorter trip, I found this ride to be very challenging, not so much because of the elevation changes, but because the paths were so rocky.

Union Mill in Clifton: This trail has no name. But its one of the biggest hidden secrits of Norther Virginia. NoVa has no great trails, but this trail is perfect for serious mountain bikers. Trail discription: a 3.5 mile loop of rocky steep uphills ans thrilling downhills for all skill levels. Its a little scary if you are riding alone because you will hardly see any one on the trail. So you can go as fast as you want. I usually keep my cell phone on me in case I got hurt and needed help or somthing. Directions: From I-66 go south on the Fairfax Co Parkway, go south on 29 (Lee Highway), make a left on Union Mill toward Clifton, keep going for about 5 miles untill you pass a Golf Counrty club on your left, about half amile after the GC you will see some electric boxes on the right side of the street, skip the first boxes and keep going untill you see the second electric box on your right, park right after the box and the trail head will be hidden between the trees. The trail head is a rocky downhill that is a thrill for going down fast. The downhill will end right into the trail loop. You can make either a left or right turns, I recommend going right if you like rocky uphills that are very technically challenging. If you go right you will have a more challenging uphill but less technical. Have fun.
