Annapolis Rock

Annapolis Rock Professional Review and Guide

"This popular hike follows the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) northbound from US 40 along South Mountain to Annapolis Rock, accessed by a side trail heading west.

The Annapolis Rock hike is very popular for several reasons: It is close to Frederick, Maryland; the hiking is pleasant and mostly easy going; there is a campground near the rocks so it sees its share of backpackers; and the view from Annapolis Rock is superb.

A longer variation of this hike can be made by continuing along the A.T. for another mile to the side trail to Black Rock, which is also on the west side of the ridge."

"The clean white faces of Annapolis Rock arguably offer the state’s finest climbing opportunities. However, with an hourlong approach along the Appalachian Trail, the crags are visited by more hikers than climbers. The area’s west exposure provides a great view of the Potomac River Valley and, quite often, a stunning sunset. Consequently, Annapolis Rock is a popular camping area with AT hikers, and there are numerous sites located near the overlook at the top of the cliff."
