Monocacy National Battlefield

Monocacy National Battlefield Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This lesser-known but lovingly preserved Civil War battlefield is operated by the National Park Service. Along with a visitor center, it has multiple hikes in three areas, which require a car to access. The hikes explore the grounds of an old mill and historic farm that straddles the Monocacy
(pronounced muh-NOCK-a-see) River.

To begin your hike, drive from the visitor center to Gambrill Mill (stop 5 on the self-guided history tour). The Gambrill Mill trailhead is by the parking lot and begins on a boardwalk built over a creek surrounded by huge trees that were probably here during the fateful battle. Because the slow-moving stream is covered by forest, the first part of this half-mile hike is in the shade."
