River Trail Fort Washington

River Trail: Fort Washington Professional Review and Guide

"For two centuries, Fort Washington’s primary purpose was to defend the nation’s capital. Today, it is a national park that offers families a great green space for recreation and an incredible historical display detailing the fort’s military operations from 1809 to 1946. Exhibits in the visitor center and the fort tell its story.

An underutilized national park in the DC area because it is not well known, this spectacular place provides all the elements necessary for a great family outing: hiking, fishing, picnicking, history, and expansive views along the Potomac River. The hike begins on the river side of the fort. The trail leads you around the fort, along the edge of the peninsula, and past the lighthouse, which is still used for boat navigation."
