Morgan Run Natural Environmental Area

Morgan Run Natural Environmental Area Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Morgan Run Natural Environmental Area includes approximately 1,400 acres of wonderful hiking and equestrian trails. The entire area has been blissfully left alone, with well-maintained trails but no unnecessary “improvements,” making it a perfect place to “get away from it all.” The first thing you notice at Morgan Run is birds—songbirds flitting about, shuttling from the tall trees to the regenerating fields and their many birdhouses, while within the woods woodpeckers and owls make their incessant noises, hawks and turkey vultures wheel above, and startlingly massive wild turkeys waddle over the trails.

Because this hike frequently leads from woods to the edge of fields, you will constantly hear branches cracking and leaves crunching as the creatures move about, but you’ll have a hard time spotting them. Abundant life and energy surround you here."

"A hike for birders. You will see a variety of raptors at work as you walk through old fields and young forest, followed by an interlude into a steep creek ravine. This hike is for the birds, especially the raptors. Much of the walk is through old fields and recovering forest. In the fields, red-tailed hawks and kestrels ply their trade with impunity. In the woods, barred owls hoot to alert others downtrail of your presence there. By the hedgerows, even the shrill killdeer cannot drown the songs of indigo buntings and rufous-sided towhees, darting in and out of the thicket. In the woods in spring, you can sit by Morgan Run for an hour listening to the courting wood thrushes. Special considerations: The area is open to hunting; check the kiosk for schedules. There is no hunting in Maryland on Sunday. Although the elevation gain is minimal, this hike has many short ups and downs."

The trail was designed more as an equestrian area than it was for hiking. The real killer though was that everything except for the wooded areas (which were nice) was covered in ankle high tick infested dry grass. Probably not a huge deal for the horses, but it was murder on your average hiker.

Pretty, but not quite what I expected. Much of the walking is through mowed lanes in fields, or minimally marked trails in the edge-woods. Looks like great bird habitat, and we saw quite a bit given that it was a cold windy day. I will be back to bird, but wouldn't think of it so quickly for hiking, per se.
The river is sweet and little - looks like it might be nice to find some trout there in the spring.
