Sugarloaf Mountain Professional Review and Guide
"Washington’s nearest mountain is vista-rich Sugarloaf Mountain, located in southern Frederick County. You can hike up, around, and down it in half a day. You can also use the map to devise shorter or longer options. This woodland hike is a clockwise loop featuring 814 feet of elevation change. The Mountain Loop Trail, designated with white blazes, starts from West View, the highest parking lot and picnic area. The trail remains level for a while as it traverses the backcountry, remaining predominantly in thick woods with rocky outcrops.
The second half of the hike descends to the main entrance and then proceeds back up to the West View parking lot. The Potomac Appalachian Trail Club maintains these trails; most are blazed, color coded, and signposted but can still be confusing."
