Green Ridge Hiking Trail North Spur Loop

Green Ridge Hiking Trail North Spur Loop Professional Review and Guide

"A pleasant, sometimes challenging hike featuring more than a dozen stream crossings, a few rugged ascents through pine forest, and mountain views. This is a fine hike for introducing a young person (or someone not so young) to backpacking. Or you can enjoy it all in a day. The hike offers a blend of streamside rambling, rock-hop creek crossings, and deep woods walking. Although there are several ascents that will get even a fit hiker heaving, none are sustained for more than a few hundred yards.

Nor do they climb more than a couple hundred feet. At about 45,000 acres, Green Ridge State Forest is Maryland’s largest contiguous public land area. It is also a land of incredible biodiverisity: There are more species of trees and shrubs in this forest than in all of Europe. Special considerations: During spring, be prepared for muddy conditions along Pine Lick. The area is managed for hunting; check with rangers for season dates."

Are we even sure there's a trail there?! Blazing?! Where?! I spent 30 minutes trying to find the trailhead. I asked a DNR officer who was parked along the road. He just looked at me like I spoke Greek. I gave up and went to another trail in the park. But, just to add salt to the wounds, I picked up a nail and ended up changing a truck tire in the mud! Oh, yeah! Lot's of fun in Green Ridge! Save yourself the hassle and go to a park that has properly marked trailheads. I'm sure we'll all get lost at one time or another on the trail, but we shouldn't get lost finding the DARN things!!!!

Serenity is a most appropriate description of this trail. It is no longer called the Green Ridge Trail but rather the Pine Lick Trail. Not difficult at all to hike, except maybe when the creeks are up in the spring. There is a newer trail called Twin Oaks Trail just east of Double Pine Road which would make a much better and rustic circuit with this trail rather than the road. Many well separated campsites for rental. Watch the blazing - the white diamond is a poor blaze for marking turns. See Green Ridge State Forest map for details on this and other trails in this beuatiful forest.
