Raven Rock, Devils Racecourse, and High Rock Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"Two vistas and an interesting geological phenomenon await those willing to undertake this moderate hike. You reach the view from Raven Rock after just 0.2 mile of hiking, while High Rock is at the end of the northbound leg of the journey. In between these two is a side trip to Devils Racecourse, described by some as a “river of rock.” Although glaciers did not reach this far south, the expansion of freezing water that had seeped into small cracks in the rocks on the hillside caused them to break apart into small pieces and flow into the valley below.
Take the A.T. north to ascend through a forest of deciduous and evergreen trees. The side trail to the right at 0.2 mile will take you about 100 feet to Raven Rock, a prominent cliff with views of the hollow you just ascended. Continue on the A.T. and gain the crest of South Mountain. Come to a threeway intersection and turn left onto the blue-blazed trail to Raven Rock Shelter at 1.0 mile."
