South Mountain State Park Appalachian Trail Backpackers’ Campgrounds

South Mountain State Park: Appalachian Trail Backpackers’ Campgrounds Professional Review and Guide

"South Mountain State Park more than 8,000 acres, following the ridge of South Mountain from Pen Mar, just south of the Pennsylvania border, to Weverton, just north of the Potomac River; the total park acreage is over 13,000 and includes the South Mountain State Battlefield, site of the September 1862 Civil War battle.

There are three backpackers’ campgrounds along the Maryland section of the AT: Dahlgren (something of a legend for AT thru-hikers), Pogo, and Annapolis Rock. Using the Maryland AT midpoint overnight parking area off US 40, Pogo is 4 miles north, Annapolis Rock is 2.2 miles north, and Dahlgren is 5.2 miles south."
