Potomac River, North Branch

Potomac River, North Branch Professional Review and Guide

"Destined to be one of the best tailwater fisheries in the country and less than three hours from Washington, D.C. I knew I’d seen this river before. It’s faintly chalky lime green color matches the South Fork of the Snake, and here as well as there, you’ll find cutthroat and browns.

Both are tailwaters and superb fisheries, and floating them is the most effective way to get to the fish. But the canyons and cliffs of Swan Valley bear little resemblance to the deep, forested valley through which the North Branch courses. And at Pap’s, a wonderful country store-cum-tackle shop at Barnum, the only sage you’ll encounter is its octogenarian founder. Species: Brook, brown, cutthroat, rainbow. Angling methods: spin, and fly-fishing."
