SOWEBO Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"SOWEBO (Southwest Baltimore) has been struggling to reinvent itself for years. A high crime rate, tenacious poverty, and general hopelessness have long defined some pockets of this area of the city. But things have begun to improve. A vigorous civic association, the arrival on the scene of the new University of Maryland BioPark, and an absolute treasure trove of historical sites make SOWEBO a good place to check out. Visit the sites, walk the streets, patronize local vendors at the annual SOWEBohemian Music & Arts Festival, and be in on the continued revitalization. Your rewards: the homes of two of the most influential writers and thinkers in American literature and letters—Edgar Allan Poe and H. L. Mencken—and the birthplace of American railroading. Not bad for a place many Baltimoreans and outsiders rarely visit."
