Prettyboy Reservoir CCC Trail

Prettyboy Reservoir: CCC Trail Professional Review and Guide

"Expect some solitude on this simple walk in the woods with sneak peeks of the Prettyboy Reservoir. The return trip includes a spur trail that ends at a scenic spot where you can take a load off and take in the waterfront view.

If you are looking for solitude in a very rural setting, Prettyboy CCC trail should do the trick. It’s located in the far northwest corner of Baltimore County and is not terribly well-known. The trail follows a wide fire road path until it loops. On the return you’ll take a spur to a great spot over-looking the water, perfect for picnicking and fishing. Swimming, wading, and camping are not permitted, and boats are allowed by permit only. The trail out and the loop are not overwhelmingly scenic; the draw is the rather thick forest, the wildlife, and the peace and quiet. The highlight is on the spur trail on the return trip. If you choose, you can skip the loop portion altogether and head straight to the trail that meets the water’s edge."

"Enjoy a solitary stroll through a pine forest on an old fire road. The out loop will tease you with water views, and the return loop will lead you to the water’s edge.

Beginning at the trailhead, you’ll enter the forest on a very wide path, cut by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), the Depression-era jobs program. The dirt and gravel trail here has two clearly discernible tire tracks with higher grass in the middle. Deep woods flank the trail, but the width of the path gives you open walking space."

This is a nice area with interlaced wide fire roads. We suggest printing a topo map which shows them. The map in the guide is limited. A few notes on the guide: 1- Tracey's Store Road is marked with a typical street sign, and 2- there are 3 areas with an orange cable strung between orange posts. We think the author intended for the 3rd of these to be the trailhead. The 1st has a no parking sign but we parked there and walked the trail to a beautiful section of the reservoir. We then drove further up Tracey's Store Road, passed the 2nd orange cable, and parked where the 3rd is. There were other cars parked there and the fire roads matched the map if you ignore all the other fire roads intersected which are absent from the guide books map. This place may be beautiful in the fall. We also noted a trailhead off the intersection of I-83 and Mr. Carmel Road, and that Pretty Boy is next to Gunpowder Falls SP.

This is a great family-friendly trail. We were seeking a trail that would accomodate our jogging stroller and this was it. Although a little off the main road, it is stroller accessible, we really enjoyed our early fall afternoon here.
