Leakin Park–Gwynns Falls Trail Portion Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"Have several “I can’t possibly be anywhere near a city” moments along this amazingly wild and isolated trail through the largest unbroken urban forest in the United States. The directions below might seem a little confusing. Here’s the reasoning: Turning onto Franklintown Road from Forest Park Avenue will indeed eventually bring you to the Winans Meadow parking area; however, you have to swerve around a confusing “Road Closed” sign at Franklintown that actually refers to Winans Way, a few miles away.
In addition, once you’re on Franklintown Road, if you proceed past the Winans Meadow parking area, you find yourself on an obstacle course of debris that is Franklintown Road just beyond the park entrance. Some of the roads are closed to traffic, and others are not—and it’s often difficult to tell which is which. To avoid all of this, I choose to park at Winans and Briarclift (see directions below) and walk from there; the hike described below corresponds to where I parked."
