Druid Hill Park Lake Loop Trail

Druid Hill Park Lake Loop Trail Professional Review and Guide

"With plenty of opportunity to relax, enjoy a loop around Druid Lake and everything else that historic Druid Hill Park has to offer. Most traffic will be folks trying to get into (or stay in) shape. If you had to dream up the perfect “urban hike,” Druid Hill Park Lake Loop might very well be it.

It’s long enough and configured in such a way to give people a serious workout if they choose to circle several times, but easy enough for those who just want a leisurely stroll. Along the way, your choice of views includes the busy downtown, serene woodlands, and the mix-and-match character of north Baltimore."

Very accessible (I biked in via Wyman Park Drive, which became East Drive inside the park) ... but this accessibility means crowds -- although there is generally plenty of room, one needs to be highly mindful of others -- e.g., the elderly and/or infirm who want to stroll in the opposite direction from the posted clockwise direction, the kids who aren't looking where they are going (much less others), the dog-walkers who languidly shuffle in the bike lane, and, worst of all, the joggers who cut across the bike lane without any apparent fear of collision -- all of this happened to me several times within just a few minutes! (i.e., two laps) Furthermore, all these issues are magnified at the southern portion of the paved "trail" where it constricts to only about 4-5 feet across -- I had to shout "passing on your left" about four times (x4) before one dog-walker restrained her mutts. Still, a very beautiful and well-maintained park. I intend to return (but I'm considering bringing an air-horn with me next time).
More of a leisurely walk/jog than a true hike, this is a nice wide, flat, paved road around the reservoir. Obviously very urban, part of this path is directly next to a busy road (but well separated for safety.) Plenty of parking, adjacent to the Zoo if that interests you. Pretty well lit (I think they close at sundown but I ran there slightly after that anyway and still felt pretty safe.) I love to jog here!
