Bolton Hill Professional Review and Guide
"The Bolton Hill neighborhood has signified many things over the years—wealth, easy living, and a knack for attracting, rearing, and retaining an extraordinary collection of outsize personalities. Markers on today’s Bolton Hill houses immortalize these personalities through the neighborhood’s Blue Plaques program, modeled after a similar program in London. A century and a half ago, Bolton Hill’s location a mile and a half from downtown made it a tough sell. But after the installation of a trolley line to serve the neighborhood, Bolton Hill was advertised as a special sort of paradise, removed from the hustle and bustle of the docks down by the harbor. Though it now sits in the middle of an expanded Baltimore City, Bolton Hill still retains a whiff of exclusivity. This walk takes in the faded (and not so faded) splendor of Bolton Hill’s wonderful and unique brownstones and travels the paths of writers, artists, philosophers, and philanthropists, easily identified by the numerous historical markers. I encourage you to wander every side street in Bolton Hill for plentiful wonderful surprises.
