Cedar Tree Neck Sanctuary - Beach, Pond, and Forest Trail

Cedar Tree Neck Sanctuary - Beach, Pond, and Forest Trail Professional Review and Guide

"With more than 300 prime acres, this sanctuary, preserved by the Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation, offers visitors the chance to explore beach, forest, and wetland habitats and to revel in views of Vineyard Sound and the Elizabeth Islands from atop a seaside overlook. There is a rich history of land preservation here as well.

One of the cofounders of the Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation, a local land trust, was Henry Beetle Hough, award-winning editor of the Vineyard Gazette, the island’s newspaper. The Hough homestead is nearby, and the Hough family donated 70 acres to help create the sanctuary. The Daggett family, long-time residents, sold the foundation 100 acres at a price well below market value to protect the area’s fragile beauty. The Foundation purchased another 40 acres through a gift from the family of Alexander S. Reed, an avid birder and naturalist."
