Located just about 100 miles from Boston, Wellfleet occupies 35 square miles on the outer Cape, right at the forearm of the 60-mile peninsula. Originally part of Eastham, it gained its independence a dozen years before the American Revolution began. Like most Cape towns, Wellfleet has been a fishing community since the first settlers entered its protected harbor in the seventeenth century. By the mid-1800s, it was also developing a reputation as a tourist destination.
