Plenty of kettle hole ponds can be found on Cape Cod, created in the wake of the retreating ice sheet from melting glacier water left behind in geologic indentations. But Wellfleet’s ponds seem special, in terms of both “swimability” and general beauty. The largest, Gull Pond, has been refreshing swimmers and replenishing parched souls (often one and the same) since local Nauset and Payomet Indians were on this landscape many centuries ago. Today, Gull attracts enthusiastic crowds of vacationers, especially families eager to swim, boat, fish, or enjoy all three. (Beach stickers are required from third week in June through Labor Day.)
