Wellfleet Harbor Great Island to Jeremy Point

Wellfleet Harbor: Great Island to Jeremy Point Professional Review and Guide

"Great Island in Wellfleet is one of the most remote areas on the Cape. The island, like Nauset Marsh, is part of the Cape Cod National Seashore, federally owned and run, and hence is one of the few places on the Cape with public access year-round. It is also a magnificent shore, undeveloped in an area of creeping summer house settlement. The island has high dunes and pitch pine forests, and the 7-mile round-trip hike along the Great Island Trail, the national seashore’s longest, runs through it.

The wide expanses of tidal flats at low tide are home to the famous Wellfleet oyster, and you can see a great variety of wading birds. Great Island also has historical significance in that it was once the site of an eighteenth-century whaler’s tavern when Great Island was an island and not connected by the mainland as it is today. The high bluffs served as a good lookout point for pilot whales when Wellfleet was a major whaling port."
