Discover Cape Cod
by Michael O'Connor (Appalachian Mountain Club Books)
The harbor of this picturesque Outer Cape town of Wellfleet is a recreational enthusiast’s delight: You can swim, fish, sail, hike, dig for shellfish, and reserve space on a charter boat bound for Cape Cod Bay practically all in the same day.
Kayaking has become an increasingly popular addition to the list; during the summer, especially, it’s a rare day that you don’t see single paddlers, or more often, multiple boats in small flotillas on the water. Some kayakers can be spied paddling purposefully across the harbor to Great Island, where they spend an hour or three on this impressive barrier beach. Others leave the pier, hook to the right around Mayo Beach, and explore the upper reaches of the harbor to where it meets the mouth of the Herring River.
