Mount Grace State Forest

Mount Grace State Forest Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"With a tall, eight-platform fire tower at its peak and the long-distance Metacomet-
Monadnock (M-M) Trail running up its flank, Mount Grace deserves more attention
than it gets. But located on the New Hampshire border, far from large towns, the
forest is quiet and the steep, wooded trails are usually empty."

We started the loop from the north end of the parking lot on the around the mountain trail. Conditions were clear and sunny 20 degrees with six inches of crusty snow. the first mile was relatively flat with some small hills. This trail is marked with blue markers. turning on the M&M trail the trail is marked with recent white blazes nicely done. all water crossings have recent bridges. The mile and a half climb to the fire tower is pretty steep. The snow and our winter gear made this part a real workout. when we reached the tower the wind chill was below zero so we didnt stay long. Nice views from the fire tower however it was so cold and windy I didnt take any pictures. Sorry next time. The trek down to the parking lot was a breeze and only took a half hour. All the trails were well marked. The fresh coating of snow revealed fresh deer, coyote and bobcat tracks on the entire loop. very nice forest and peaceful.

There are a few different ways to get to the summit. You can take the trail to the right at the parking lot which takes you to the Metacomet-Monadnock trail then to the summit or take the summit trail on the left of the parking lot. I took the summit trail which is 3 miles out and back. It's dumps you off on a dirt road that you take to the fire tower. Very similar to Mt Toby. I would suggest to go to the MM Trail because it's longer.

Nice and quiet but I guess I missed the snowmobiles thank God. I went to the top and the views were great from the tower though I don't think you're supposed to go up it. It used to have a fence around it but someone cut a large part out. The loop trail needs to be better blazed so keep a sharp eye out for the few blazes there are also watch for the obvious path. That helps. Most of the trail, Loop< hasn't been touched at all this winter along with the M&M trail. Snowmobile noise YUK!!!! lack of blazes :( prepare for wrong turns. Other than that a very nice time.
