Upton State Forest

Upton State Forest Professional Review and Guide

"A large portion of this ride is on fairly new trails. The surface feels like a sponge because the dirt has not been packed down by years of trail use. Additionally, the stumps in the trail have not been worn down to the ground by tires or horse hooves. These conditions make riding a little taxing because each pedal stroke loses some power to the soft, cushioned path.

These conditions also contribute a little danger as the three to five-inch stumps can stop of deflect a front wheel in an instant making a rider's next move quite crucial. Terrain: soft, loamy singletrack, packed dirt, and loose gravel doubletrack with some wicked rooty sections and hard, rock-strewn fire roads."

My wife & I were on vacation in the Cape Cod area and finished with a visit to her sister, who lives only 2 miles from the trailhead. I had an opportunity to borrow my brother-in-law's Trek (thanks Doug!) and get a quick pump in. This trail has riding similar to some areas near my home in SC. The directions in the guide book were very accurate. All in all, this is a great ride if you are wanting to get a great workout in without having to spend tons of time on the trail. Most of the trail is single track. There are a couple of muddy stream crossings and some great technical downhills. I did not find any of the climbing to be difficult at all, with the exception of the steep, technical climb at the end. This required some pushing but it seems rideable if you are familiar with the trail and know it's coming. I wish I had more time to explore this very nice state forest. I feel like there is much more riding available here than what I experienced. Also, at the time this guide was written, it notes that the trail needed to be broken in due to its being new. I did not find this to be a problem at all. Great trail!
