This road actually extends from just north of Wellfleet Center where the winding route is West Main Street, before becoming Bound Brook Road and then Old County Road as it approaches Pamet Point Road. Old County Road ends at the Pamet River near Truro Center. But because this trip includes the river, Truro Harbor, Castle Road, and Corn Hill (and its beach) it does not include the Wellfleet section, to make the trip a reasonable length. Before Route 6 pushed through, this was a main route from Wellfleet to Truro; today, it’s the scenic way, although the summer vehicle traffic (lots of tourists) requires that cyclists use extra caution. From Old County Road’s juncture with Pamet Point Road, pedal north on a twisty, sometimes hilly road that offers cyclists everything Route 6 cannot: fine scenery, less vehicular traffic, and a close-up experience with a remarkable “old Cape” landscape. This is an area of coastal wetlands, old farms, and once-cleared hillsides that previously offered vistas of Cape Cod Bay but are now again covered with resurgent forests of scrub oak and pitch pine. Pedaling north, you see a seemingly impenetrable marsh on your left.
