Millers River

Millers River Professional Review and Guide

"This eTrail includes two sections of Massachusetts' Millers River: South Royalston to Athol and Erving to Millers Falls. The Upper Millers (trip A) run starts in South Royalston, just a mile below the Birch Hill Dam, which completely controls the discharge. The river offers a pleasant trip in medium water, with no major difficulties. It should require no scouting. The Lower Millers, as this section is known, has some of the same drawbacks as the Upper Millers, although it offers better whitewater sport.

The run begins near one paper company, ends near another, and passes by a landfill along the way. How’s that for scenery? Route 2 follows the river for the first half of the trip, and there is a short picturesque valley near the end. Running the rapids consists mostly of riding up and down haystacks, with little or no vigorous maneuvering. Some stretches of rapids are long, and one in particular (the Funnel) is very heavy and tricky. Parts of the run are excellent for practicing surfing techniques or for instruction."

Access to the dam from Birch Hill Dam Rd. is closed to traffic at a small parking area near the center, a long hike. So I drove in on River Rd. , which is a dirt track, but gets pretty close to the dam. There are several places to wade in. The river is a mix of pools and faster moving water through rocks. That is, good trout habitat. I was there in the middle of a day that started out cloudy and cool, but turned suddenly sunny and hot. Until then fish were rising and I got several hits on an orange simulator at a pool just below the dam. Some bass fishermen showed up just as I was leaving. There are several places with easy access in S. Royalston. There's some fast moving streamwater next to Blossom Street that looks promising for my next trip. The river flows a long way and there are lots of places to enter the water with a variety of habitat. This is a good looking river and a pleasant and productive place to fish.
