Great Brook Farm State Park Trail

Great Brook Farm State Park Trail Professional Review and Guide

"After a heavy, wet snow, Great Brook can be like a kayaking trip through Florida’s mangrove swa1nps-a lovely, tangled adventure. You’ll tunnel your way under dense canopies of brush, and duck under arbors of snowy limbs, to emerge near wide-open pastures. Okay, so maybe it’s not exactly like kayaking amidst the mangroves, but it is a similar sensation when the conditions are right!

A mere forty-minute ride from Boston, this is a rather unusual state park among the 100-plus parks and state reservations in Massachusetts. Until 1974, the 1000-acre property was a private home and dairy farm. Then the park service purchased it to preserve a little piece of New England’s farming history. You’ll discover some old stone walis as you wander the main trail. Even older stone walis, dating back to the 16008, may be seen on the other side of the park, in an area called “The City.""
