Upper Race Brook Falls and Mount Race

Upper Race Brook Falls and Mount Race Professional Review and Guide

"A hike of superlatives—a spectacular series of waterfalls, a stupendous laurel bloom mid-June to early July, and excellent views from the southern Taconic ridge line on Mount Race make this one of the most picturesque hikes in the Berkshires.

Sign in at the kiosk trail register. A large topographic map of the route and other information is posted here. Trail maps may be available. Black bears and occasionally endangered timber rattlesnakes are encountered. A nonnative mulberry tree near the kiosk produces sweet fruit relished by birds and mammals. Turn left and follow blue blazes down an initially eroded path and cross a shallow brook on stepping-stones. The path bears left and is built up in a wet area under white ashes and sugar maples. Cross a rill and skirt the edge of a field on a narrow path through grasses, bedstraw, red clover, and daisies in summer. A few red cedars are scattered about."
