Three Mile Pond

Three Mile Pond Professional Review and Guide

"A great place for exploring, with sights that include bog islands and bizarre plants. Three Mile Pond was once a foggy wetlands fed by the slow-flowing waters of Ironwork Brook. In the 1960s a large earth-and-stone flood-control dam was built at the bog’s south extremity, impounding the brook. As the water level rose it drowned the bog and created the pond. While fragile by nature, bogs can at times be remarkably resilient—as this one proved to be.

Rather than remain submerged, large sections of bog appeared on the surface of the water as massive mats of sphagnum moss. Over the past decades the islands of Three Mile Pond have continued to evolve into a distinctive habitat found in few other places and home to a wide array of plants dependent on the acidic environment bogs provide."
