Lime Kiln Farm Wildlife Sanctuary

Lime Kiln Farm Wildlife Sanctuary Professional Review and Guide

"This biologically diverse property in the Housatonic valley boasts rolling hayfields with magnificent vistas and hardwood forest alive with songbirds, almost in the shadow of Mount Everett and the Taconic Range; a fine walk for families with small children. From the parking lot, there is a wonderful view of Mount Everett (2,624 feet elevation and 3 miles distant). You’ll approach a large, colorful map with trail information, and an adjacent donation box among apple trees.

Trail maps are available here. Blue plastic discs indicating outbound travel mark the route, with yellow ones indicating return travel. Amble under a canopy of apple trees down the former dairy farm lane—hayfield to the right and marsh to the left—where sweetflag, with greenish-yellow flower spikes the size and shape of your pinkie and cattail-like leaves, thrives; it’s actually a relative of jack-in-the-pulpit. Pink-flowering hairy willow herb fills the wetland in summer."
