North River Veratec Dam to Deerfield River

North River: Veratec Dam to Deerfield River Professional Review and Guide

"The lower North is similar in difficulty to the Chickley except that it is larger, gathering inflows from several streams along its path. It is also ledgier, with a few rapids holding interesting hydraulics in medium and high water. The advantage of the North is that it requires minimal runoff to make it runnable, although it is more civilized than the Chickley, making it a bit less scenic.

Start below a wooden dam that diverts water just upstream of the Veratec plant in Colrain. Parking is very limited at the put-in, so plan to unload quickly and leave only one car here. The first half-mile is class I–II, with the heaviest rapid just above the second bridge in a left turn. Beware the outflow from the pipes at the base of the factory. Who knows what microbes lurk therein?"
