Canoe Meadows Sanctuary

Canoe Meadows Sanctuary Professional Review and Guide

"At this tranquil 262-acre retreat along the Housatonic River, hardwood forest, meadow, riparian corridor, pond, field, and swamp woodlands contribute to varied travel and fine wildlife-watching. Two short hikes introduce the area: Sacred Way (a pond-and-river circuit) and Wolf Pine Trail (a woodland tour) explore the sanctuary. These relaxing strolls invite leisurely touring with binoculars and identification guidebooks in hand. For Sacred Way, hike east on either the service road or the mowed track, entering a pocket of shrubs to the right of the kiosk and bearing right to round West Pond, a small wildlife pond. Bramble and goldenrod claim its immediate bank, with a dense row of pine along the opposite shore. For the Wolf Pine Trail, hike the service road as it passes through a field, skirts West Pond, and trends southeast along the watery link between West Pond and the wildlife observation pond. Maple, elm, and wild grape interweave the roadway’s pine corridor.

Special attractions: Bird watching, canoeing, enclosed blind, replica wigwam, a unique pine, wildflowers, fall foliage."
