Canoe Meadows Sanctuary

Canoe Meadows Sanctuary Professional Review and Guide

"Canoe Meadows Sanctuary is a natural oasis of ponds, marsh, and forest just minutes from downtown Pittsfield. Long before European settlers came to the Berkshires the area around Canoe Meadows was home to many Native American families for a few seasons each year. The Housatonic River was their roadway, the trees provided maple sugar, and in the open fields they grew their staple crops. Later the area became the grounds of an exclusive estate called Gravesley. Today the ponds, marshes, fields, and forests are a Mass Audubon Sanctuary with as much wildlife as there are reminders of the past. It is a lovely place to walk and watch and ponder all that has gone before.

The path passes through a wide open area of grasses and wildflowers before entering shady woods of red pine and white pine that grow along the bank of the pond. The trail here was once a carriage road within the vast estate known as Gravesley. Though much evidence of the road’s existence has vanished with time, a few vestiges remain, including a few brick storm drains and an old utility pole on Wolf Pine Trail. Other signs of times past are beds of daylilies and pachysandra that now grow in the woods, but were planted as landscape plants when the area was open and sunny."
