North River

North River Professional Review and Guide

"This North River section forms part of the Wampanoag Commemorative Canoe Passage that ends at the mouth of the Taunton River. Though we did not see much species diversity, we did get a lot of exercise paddling against the tide. If we had timed it better, we could have paddled upstream on an incoming tide and returned on an outgoing tide. Another possibility, with two vehicles, would be to make this a one-way trip on an outgoing tide, putting in at the Indian Head Drive access and taking out at Bridge Street. Though you could paddle up to the Indian Head access on an incoming tide if you had enough time, you could not paddle there against an outgoing tide. A warning:tidal flow around bridges and river bends can lead to treacherous conditions; always wear your PFD, and do not take novice paddlers here. Expect to see: marsh and riverine birds, marsh wrens."
