Black Pond Nature Preserve

Black Pond Nature Preserve Professional Review and Guide

"Black Pond is a quaking cedar bog with a variety of unique plants and trees. The trail is a short one, but within a forty-minute walk you can see three environments: a mature upland forest, a swamp forest, and the relatively rare sphagnum bog with one-acre Black Pond at its center.

The plant life around the bog is so unusual that it gives one the feeling of being in a strange country. Highlights: Boardwalk leading to rare quaking cedar bog, unusual plants, Atlantic white cedars."

I felt as though this was a very strange arrangement to have to call ahead to get permission, and the number given was not affiliated with the town, who apparently is in charge of this location. We went there anyway, and had to park on the shoulder of the road, which was narrow and winding, as the parking area and the trail entrance were roped off. It was possible to squeeze by the pole with the rope on it, or just step over it. They need to either close the trail, or provide an explanation as to why it is so convoluted to gain access. Therefore, I would not recomend this trail. The little bit of the trail we did see was not well maintained (boardwalk not clear, and branches over boardwalk).
