Late report - headed up to Brace Mountain to see the highest point in Dutchess County, NY. Hiked by myself on an overcast day (trip date is approx.) took Rt 22 to Rt 44 to Rt 62 to Deer Run Road and started there. Great views to the southwest and a clean fresh water stream on the way up. First climb for me. Considered it moderately strenuous but am dealing w/illness. At the start of the climb spotted a large bear moving north (quite briskly) perpendiculat to trail approx. 50 yds. in just before steeper incline begins. Bear did not see me (I think) and after some hesitation completed the climb w/great excitement. Rested on a sunny group of flat rocks at my summit and got quite confused on the way down. Wound up climbing down some sheer earth and sharp stone faces. Would pay more attention here next time.

Vigorous climb heading north out of Bull's Bridge! Great views back into NY State but lots of highway noise on the east side of the mountain. Be aware that the CT Appalachian Trail folks do not want fires of any kind. They would also like you to sign-in at designated areas. I have yet to figure out where those areas might be. Nice trail!

We started at the Pattison Rd trailhead and headed south on the AT to the Wilbur clearing leanto. Trail had about 6 inches of snow cover as of 2 weeks ago. No blowdowns to speak of and overall this section is in very good condition.
