Sanford Farm, Ram Pasture and Woods Trail

Sanford Farm, Ram Pasture and Woods Trail Professional Review and Guide

"This trail explores the southern half of Nantucket. The trail meanders through a beautiful, open field ending at a lush, secluded beach. This is a well-marked walk that teaches the agricultural roots of the island at each informational marker. The length of this hike is deceiving as you get swept up in the beauty of your surroundings.

Begin your walk across a lovely meadow, along the edge of Trots Swamp, a stretch of freshwater wetlands, and into a
stand of pitch pines. On top of a rise, a wooden barn stands sentry over an incredible view. Hummock Pond glistens beyond the Ram Pasture, now dotted with osprey nest posts."

This was an easy relatively flat hike which ended us up in the most desolate and beautiful beach to enjoy a picnic at. If it takes over three miles to get there you can be sure you will not find many people there. In terms of wildlife, we saw bunnies hopping about trying to hide in the grass. The most fun were the seals which kept popping their heads in and out of the ocean water. The beach was warm but a huge undertow. It is easy enough to get to the head of the trail through one of the buses which are available in Nantucket. Many places to have a nice dinner at afterwards also.
