Benedict Pond

Benedict Pond Professional Review and Guide

"Benedict Pond is the perfect place for a family canoe outing. The lake is just the right size for an easy circuit around the shore, even with a canoe full of kids. The lake features a well-defined swimming area with a sandy beach, a well-maintained hiking trail around the pond, and even camping sites along the shore—everything you need to have a memorable day trip or weekend outing.

The pond is scenic year-round but especially so in late May and early June when the extensive thickets of mountain laurel are in bloom, and in fall when the leaves put on their colorful show. The shoreline is completely undeveloped other than the few buildings around the swimming area and is clothed in a thick, attractive forest. Benedict Pond is at an elevation of 1,597 feet and is nearly surrounded by steep hills, the tallest of which rises almost 400 feet above the pond."

Arrived on a bright sunny afternoon. The pond is rather small and took less than an hour to paddle the circumference which included several minutes watching a nesting heron. There are no motorboats allowed on the pond with the exception of small electric motors. We then took another hour and hiked the trail around the pond. This appears to be a well used trail with views of the pond and touches on part of the Appalachian trail. Next to the launch area is a public beach and picnic area with a bath house and restrooms. The entire area is part of the Bear Mountain State Forest and they charge a $5.00 parking fee. This is a great place for an easy paddle, hike, and swim. You could easily spend a good family day here.
