Connecticut River Poplar Street to School Street

Connecticut River: Poplar Street to School Street Professional Review and Guide

"This nine-mile trip is one of the few areas that have been officially designated a water trail. From the access under the railroad bridge at Poplar Street the confluence of the Deerfield and Connecticut Rivers is visible just upstream. The Deerfield is a moody river that can swing from a subdued shallow stream to a torrential deluge in a matter of hours.

All this in spite of a string of dams that deaden its personality. When calm and shallow, the river easily empties its flow into the Connecticut, willingly assimilating into the larger river and quickly losing its individuality. The few eddies and boils that stir the surface quickly fade into impotent swirls and ripples, then disappear."

A lovely Sunday afternoon trip: Put in at School Street boat ramp, paddle upriver for as long as you please; then turn around and float back, admiring the silver maples and stopping for a snack at the second island. Most motorized craft don't make it up this far and though you'll encounter fellow paddlers, it felt quiet and peaceful. Really wonderful.
