Monroe State Forest

Monroe State Forest Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Dunbar Brook flows through some of the most isolated terrain in Massachusetts. Steep, boulder-pocked slopes rise above the stream as it drops into the deep gorge of the Deerfield River. Loggers could not penetrate the topography and today Monroe State Forest boasts some of the finest old-growth forest in southern New England.

The route journeys up Dunbar Brook Trail, winding along the slopes and waters of its namesake stream. The Dunbar Brook Shelter is located within a mile of the trailhead near the stream. Two other shelters—Ridge and Smith Hollow—can be found higher up on the forest slopes. The area is lightly used, and crowds tend to be minimal. Campfires are permitted."
