Blue Hills Reservation

Blue Hills Reservation Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The 7,000-acre Blue Hills Reservation, which lies less than 20 miles south of Boston, offers breathtaking views, challenging climbs, and refreshing forest vistas.

The reservation’s varied landscape will take you through thick forest, marsh, and meadow landscapes just minutes apart, and past ponds, bogs, reservoirs, and even swampland in rapid succession. So close to the city but a world apart, the Blue Hills are a favorite retreat for urban dwellers who feel briefly drawn to a wilder setting."

"Start at a sea-level pond and bog and, in just 0.5 mile, climb nearly 500 feet to Tucker Hill, passing through three separate ecosystems. Follow the high ridge along the much-loved Skyline Trail to Buck Hill (496 feet) with its views of the Boston skyline, Boston Harbor, and fantastic sunsets. Then return from scattered pine, hemlock, and scrub oak on the rocky ridgeline to lush lily pads, maples, and sandy bogs below." Read more

The trail system in the Blue Hills offer something for all skill and conditioning levels. My wife and I hike there year round. To be sure, the hills are not comparable to the White Mountains but I enjoy the varied terrain. On the Skyline Trail (marked with blue blazes)you might be hiking up a steep hill for 15 minutes, then down hill for a while, then back uphill. It gives a change of pace that you don't get in the White Mountains when you travel up or downhill for hours at a time. If you don't like hills (and some are very steep and rocky) there are nearly flat trails marked with green blazes.

This reservation,is in my opinion, well worth the trip. The trail system offers excellent hiking\mountain biking etc. for just about any skill level. The trails were very well maintained and very clearly blazed, I definately will return in the near future. Just the view of the boston skyline is something to marvel at, not to mention other attractions including an observatory and museum also. All in all this will remain one of my favorites for some time to come.
