Crane Beach

Crane Beach Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"One this hike you will follow the shoreline of one of Massachusetts’s most immaculate beaches. Approaching the marshes of Essex and the coast of Gloucester, you’ll cross into the high dunes of the inner beach and hike back along where the waves meet the beach.

To start your exploration, turn right and lay down some footprints in the sand as you head southeast. Though New England’s beach season is understood to run from the first day of summer through Labor Day, a good many New Englanders know the beach is at its most sublime in autumn. Leashed dogs are permitted October 1– March 31 but restricted to below high-tide line."

Detailed Trail Descriptions from Our Guidebooks

"Traverse wide-open sandy beaches alongside the surf to the deep sands of Crane Beach’s highest inner dunes. If you can break away from your beach chair and the surf long enough to explore, you’ll be rewarded with great coastal views and experience a microclimate within the dunes made possible by the bluffs’ sheltering presence." Be prepared as this is sand the entire walk. Some nice loops and a few out and back trails. It took us a couple of hours to cover the 6 miles. Enjoyable scenery and beaches the whole time. During the summer months (possibly all year) there is a busy beach car park that cost us $20 to park at cheaper if you are a member of the local trust. The shake shack was closed for the season when we visited mid September. If you go in the fall this drive takes you right past Russel Orchard for apple picking, Hay rides etc.
